Punthang Dechen Phodrang (The Palace of Great Bliss), also known as the Punakha Dzong, was erected by the Zhabdrung in 1637. The massive Dzong has been destroyed by fire six times, a flood once, and an earthquake once. Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan's first monarch, was crowned here on December 17, 1907. The mummified body of the Zhabdrung, who died in retreat here in 1651, is enshrined in the Machen Lhakhang, a temple within the Dzong. Built in 1328 by saint Ngagi Rinchen, Dzongchung (or the small Dzong) may still be seen across the street from the larger Dzong. Tourists may see Punakha Dzong's magnificent Kuenrey (assembly hall). Yulley Namgyal Khamsum It is a magnificent example of Bhutan's outstanding architectural and aesthetic heritage, as well as the world's only one of its sort. This temple, built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, is devoted to the kingdom's well-being and the welfare of all sentient beings. The foot of the hill on which this temple is situated is reached after a 30-minute drive from the Punakha Dzong. You must cross a suspension bridge and walk through rice fields before beginning to ascend a moderately steep route bordered by pine trees from the vehicle park. The trek up to the temple takes approximately an hour, while the hike down takes about 30 minutes. The trek may be a little muddy in the summer, so be prepared. It's a good idea to bring a trekking pole.
